photos by john spies of the the sơn doòng cave in vietnam. at 200 metres high, 150 metres wide and five kilometres long, it is the biggest cave in the world — so large, it has its own river, jungle and even climate. it also contains the world’s tallest stalagmite, which stands over 80 metres tall (third photo). (stalagmites are formed one drop of water at a time, with minerals in the water building up over time)
despite its immense underground size, the cave is practically invisible from the outside, seen only from the mist wafting from surface cracks. with a huge temperature difference between the cooler air inside the cave and warmer outside air, son doong is home to moving clouds of mist which, when illuminated by natural light as far as four kilometres away, create the surreal atmosphere seen in the photos.
God has a way of stripping everything that we think we need, and He leaves just Himself to us. It is never an easy thing to be in that situation; one day praising God for His goodness and the next crying out to Him to make Himself known in the storm.
When we have rooted ourselves to a safe place, God tends to rip us out of the ground and plant us somewhere new. We may hate it, revile Him for it, and even reject Him for a time. But when we look back, we will see that we needed to be uprooted, to be changed from that place that was slowly killing us.
God is the master gardener, He knows all His plants by name, He delicately removes the bad weeds and waters the good seeds. He does what needs to be done, so that one day we can look back and see the majesty that He was doing.
You are being made into a beautiful thing, something that God loves to watch grow. So the next time you are taken out of your comfort zone, know that Christ is slowly making you something great, because He is doing it; and He is the greatest thing.
Stop worrying about how you feel.
You lied, you cheated, you lusted, you gorged. You snapped, you hated, you cussed, you masturbated. You killed, you manipulated, you rejected or ignored.
God doesn’t want just half of your heart. God doesn’t want you to talk to Him only when you’re in the mood to do so. God wants all of you. He wants you when you’re sinless and when you’re sinful. He wants you on the days when you’re strong and on the days when you relapse. He doesn’t want just your beautiful parts, He wants everything.
Stop staying excuses. Stop listening to the devil. Stop thinking you can’t “go to God” because you feel you’re too unclean, ugly, or dirty. Stop worrying about how you feel because it’s not about you. Run to Him, even if you’d rather be dormant. Go to Him even if you’d rather hide in your guilt.
Ignore your laziness, embarrassment, and shame and go spend some time with the One who died for every dirty thing you think keeps Him away.
